The Dangers of Toothpicks from Schaumburg Dentist

The History of Toothpicks

Charles Foster was the innovator responsible for the first mass-produced wooden toothpicks in 1869. He may have borrowed his idea from very early man, however. Even the earliest intelligent primates likely turned to wooden sticks and twigs for oral hygiene. The edges of the sticks were frayed and softened with saliva and chewing. This made the sticks into early toothbrush. The small bits of wood were perfect for reaching in between teeth to clean out food debris. Eventually, the toothbrushes and other oral care products we know today evolved, including those little wooden toothpicks you can grab on the way out of most restaurants today.

Toothpicks Should Be Used with Caution and Care

The problem with modern toothpicks in relation to your dental health is that if you use them incorrectly, too hastily, or too often, you can end up with damage to your teeth and gums. Toothpicks can be surprisingly sturdy for something so small. Biting down on a strong wooden stick can result in chips and cracks, especially if your teeth are already weakened by decay. There is also the issue of the sharp ends of a toothpick poking and injuring your gum tissues. Any sores or ulcers on your gums provide an opportunity for bacteria to follow a direct path inside, setting you up for potential gum disease and tooth decay.
