Charles Foster was the innovator responsible for the first mass-produced wooden toothpicks in 1869. He may have borrowed his idea from very early man, however. Even the earliest intelligent primates likely turned to wooden sticks and twigs for oral hygiene. The edges of the sticks were frayed and softened with saliva and chewing. This made the sticks into early toothbrush. The small bits of wood were perfect for reaching in between teeth to clean out food debris. Eventually, the toothbrushes and other oral care products we know today evolved, including those little wooden toothpicks you can grab on the way out of most restaurants today.
